Fasting: A Way to Transform your Life

In the August Halo issue, we discussed the benefits of fasting for our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. As we continue our journey into the world of fasting, we dive deeper into the diverse array of fasting techniques that empower us to harness its potential. Fasting has evolved into a versatile tool to achieve health benefits. Whether you seek improved vitality, weight management, enhanced mental clarity, or a spiritual connection, fasting offers many methods to suit your needs. Join me as I explore these fasting techniques, each with its approach and benefits.

Begin your journey here!

  1. Digital: (partial or complete)

    Partial:  Drop social media or mainstream media or do news fast, for a week. Choose one that you consume a lot of – probably are addicted.

    Complete: Drop out of all digital media for 24-48 hours. Perhaps lock up your phone for a day or over a weekend.

  2. Food: (partial or complete)

    Partial: Drop one of your  favourite foods or drinks for one week e.g., alcohol, coffee, packaged food, red meat, fried food, sweets, etc. It should be something that you eat or drink frequently or are (almost) addicted to.

    Complete: Either skip one meal, like an intermittent fast, for a week. Or at least for 4-5 days.

  3. Speech: (partial or complete)

    Partial: Cut out one of the modes of speech – WhatsApp, text message, or verbal speech, for a whole day.

    Complete: One day of no communication – remove all channels of speaking or texting, even written notes.

  4. Judgement reserved: (Complete)  

    For a whole day, you will not express any criticism – of a person, an object, or even your job. Remember this is not a speech fast. You must continue speaking otherwise – only not criticize. This is perhaps the most difficult of all the fasts but must be observed to become aware of what you hold within.

  5. Thought Check-in: (Complete)  

    For one day, before you take any significant action or say/text anything (of substance), check in to your thought and intention that is driving the speech or action you are about to take.    

 

The power of fasting rests not in the absence of anything, but in the presence it generates. You create room for self-awareness, reflection, and rejuvenation as you abstain from food, speech, technology, or thoughts. As you embrace the process of engaging in the moment, you will feel more attuned to yourself, others, and the environment around you.

Select the one that speaks to you and practice it! I guarantee you it will be the first step towards the life you seek.  You will realize that you can be the master of your mind and, your life!
