URBAN YOGI

Keep yourself chillin’ this summer, the ayurvedic and yoga way

As the northern hemisphere braces for the summer heat in so many parts of the world, there are ways we can keep the heat in the body in check. Excessive heat in the body can lead to ulcers, skin issues, headaches, dizziness, drastically low energy and mood issues (who knows the Delhi road rage?)

Here are 5 ways to prevent excessive heat in the body.

  1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Keep yourself fully hydrated with water and fluids. Instead of chilling water in the fridge which can reduce your immunity, you can use a modern version of a traditional mud pot to cool it. I love the earthy taste of this water!
And why be boring, try infused spa water which gives a fun flavour to your water. Infuse your water with citric fruits, mint, lemon, basil - absolutely anything based on your liking!

  2. Traditional Ayurvedic digestive drinks and squashes

Have loads of flavourful drinks that cool your system and help with digestion.

Buttermilk/ Tarka Chaas: Take 3 spoons of yogurt and 2 cups of water. Churn it well and add some roasted cumin + salt to it and some mint leaves for garnish. Full of probiotics, this will replenish your electrolytes and be extremely beneficial post lunch.

Simple squashes of wood apple and aam panna made simple spices are refreshing and hydrating to the system and full of Vitamin C.

  3. Create a personal mobile AC with these breathing practices

Practice Sheetali and Sitkari pranayama to help cool your body. When practiced frequently, the benefits of them start to kick in instantly when you feel heat in the body.

  4. Regulate your body temperature with these cooling asanas

Asanas that cool the nervous system - make them your go-to. Tadasana (Mountain pose), Guided Savasana, Legs up the wall and child’s pose can be included in the day. Not to foget the meditation- that makes us icy cool!

  5. Bath in the morning and evening

The simplest and most ignored thing is to take a bath much earlier in the day when the sun is not high up in the sky. Helps to regulate the body temperature. Another bath at the closing of the day will again bring the degrees down.
